NBC Galley Observes African American History Month and President's Day

Naval Base Coronado, Calif.-In recognition of African American History Month and President’s Day, Naval Base Coronado (NBC) galley provided special entertainment and a ceremony for NBC patrons and staff at Naval Amphibious Base Coronado, Feb. 16, 2012.

The celebration included live music performed by the Navy Band Southwest’s Seabreeze Combo, a cake-cutting ceremony, and a special meal.

The Menu included prime rib, breaded shrimp, corn on the cob, asparagus, rice pilaf, French onion soup, potatoes au gratin, and various desserts.

Chief Culinary Specialist Drandreb Esparagoza (SW/AW), assigned to NBC galley said, “It is always important to recognize our history because it plays a big part in our culture, especially in our military.”

“This event is a morale booster for our patrons, as well as for those who work in our facility,” said Esparagoza.

More than 100 NBC patrons and staff members participated in the event.

The NBC galley feeds nearly 2,400 customers on a daily basis from six dining facilities, according to Culinary Specialist 1st Class Richard Ramones, assigned to NBC galley.

According to Esparagoza, NBC galley provides a special meal and celebration every month for various events, holidays and occasions.

Various patrons that utilize the NBC galley include BUD/S students, SEALS, Seabees, U.S. Marine Corps, reservists, foreign military personnel, and a variety of recruiting youth groups, such as NJROTC and Sea Cadets.

 “This type of celebration is a verification of NAB galley’s dedication in contributing to Sailors’ quality of life and morale; it demonstrates once again why they are the Ney Award winner,” said Naval Base Coronado Commanding officer Capt. Yancy Lindsey.

Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus recently announced Naval Base Coronado as the Navy 2012 Winner of the Navy Captain Edward F. Ney Memorial Awards for outstanding food Service, in the ashore category.

The NBC galley continues to strive for high quality standards in all spectrums of their facilities including cleanliness, safety, accountability, presentation and customer service.

The Ney Award will be presented to the NBC galley Saturday, March 31, in San Diego during the Excellence in Food Service Awards ceremony with the Joint Military and International Food Service Executives Association.
