SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- San Diego State University (SDSU) announced May 3, it is offering active duty service members, military spouses and family members an opportunity to appeal for priority admission into the institution.

The offer is effective with the July 11 start of the summer 2011 semester. SDSU officials said they started this program to accommodate those military spouses who departed from Japan, particularly those who would be upper division transfers or who are close to graduation to enable them to finish their studies and graduate.

"Military spouses have always supported their active duty spouse through family separation, arduous deployments and other service-related duties," said Miles Leader, Naval Base San Diego Navy College Office education technician. "With the constant challenges of relocating, higher institutions of learning are compelled to support our troops by giving the military spouse an opportunity to complete their educational goals."

The program also offers priority admission to veterans and active duty service members. Appeals from military spouses will be considered for those whose sponsors were reassigned to California after November 30, 2010.

Some of the requirements for priority admission are a one to two-page letter explaining the reason for their appeal (letter must include the academic major, mailing address, and an e-mail address and phone number), a copy of their orders or a letter from the sponsor's commanding officer in Japan, and a copy of high school and college transcripts.

"The program is a strong retention tool for the Navy," said Leader. "It sends a clear message that the Navy supports the spouse, who in turn supports the active duty service member, allowing them to perform at their peak.

"A good relationship between the Navy and SDSU is important because it places the finest the Navy has to offer into one of the finest institutions in the country," said Leader. "It also puts SDSU in the forefront by directly embracing the spouses of those who sacrifice and it sets the standard for other institutions to emulate."
